Sri Lanka is rich in history, and many locations showcase its past. Prominent historical sites include Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, and the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. These sites offer insights into ancient kingdoms, religious practices, and the cultural heritage of the nation.

Kandy


Kandy is a large city in central Sri Lanka. It's set on a plateau surrounded by mountains, which are home to tea plantations and biodiverse rainforest. The city's heart is scenic Kandy Lake (Bogambara Lake), which is popular for strolling. Kandy is famed for sacred Buddhist sites, including the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) shrine, celebrated with the grand Esala Perahera annual procession.


Sigiriya


Sigiriya or Sinhagiri is an ancient rock fortress located in the northern Matale District near the town of Dambulla in the Central Province, Sri Lanka. It is a site of historical and archaeological significance that is dominated by a massive column of granite approximately 180 m high.


Gal Viharaya



Gal Viharaya, a rock temple within the UNESCO World Heritage site of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka, is a significant historical site known for its impressive rock-cut Buddha statues. Built in the 12th century by King Parakramabahu I, it showcases exquisite craftsmanship and is a prime example of ancient Sinhalese art. The site features four statues, including a reclining Buddha, a standing Buddha, and two seated figures, each carved into the face of a large rock.

Dambulla Cave Temple


The Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka and a significant historical and religious site. It's located in central Sri Lanka, 24 km from Sigiriya. The temple complex comprises five caves adorned with murals and over 150 Buddha statues. Dating back to the 1st century BCE, it's considered the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka.



Yapahuwa


Yapahuwa, a historical rock fortress in Sri Lanka, is known for its role as a medieval capital and its connection to the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha. The site features a stunning ornamental staircase, remnants of the Temple of the Tooth, and a museum displaying artifacts from the kingdom.
