Sri Lanka Waterfalls

Diyaluma Falls

Diyaluma Falls is 220 m (720 ft) high and the second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka and 619th highest waterfall in the world. It is situated 6 km (3.7 mi) away from Koslanda in Badulla District on Colombo-Badulla highway. The falls are formed by Punagala Oya, a tributary of Kuda Oya which in turn, is a tributary of Kirindi Oya.

In Sinhalese, Diyaluma or Diya Haluma means "rapid flow of water" or may be translated as "liquid light". According to Sri Lankan historian, Dr R. L. Brohier, Diyaluma is the setting of the folklore about a tragedy involving a young chieftain who had been banished to the highlands and the attempt by his betrothed to join. As all the passes were guarded the young man let down a rope of twisted creepers over the escarpment, as she was hauled up she was dashed against the rocks and died. The Gods moved to pity by the harrowing spectacle, caused a stream of water to gush from the mountain and veil all evidence of the tragedy in a watery light, hence the term Diyaluma.

Bambarakanda Falls

Bambarakanda Falls, an hour away from the Horton Plains National Park, has the enviable distinction of being the tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka and one of the most spectacular in the monsoon. Bambarakanda Falls is at a height of 263 m and flows from the Walawe River.

Dunhinda Falls

Dunhinda Falls is a magnificent waterfall located near Badulla in Sri Lanka’s Uva  province .. Famous for its misty spray and breathtaking beauty, this waterfall is one of the country’s most iconic natural attractions. The name "Dunhinda" comes from the Sinhala word for mist, reflecting the fine mist that rises as water crashes down the rocks.

The falls drop from a height of approximately 64 meters, creating a mesmerizing scene as the water plunges into a deep pool below. Reaching Dunhinda Falls requires a scenic trek of about 1.5 kilometers through lush forested terrain, where visitors can witness a variety of birds, butterflies, and exotic flora. The journey, though slightly challenging, is rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of the waterfall.

Visitors to Dunhinda Falls can relax and take in the serene atmosphere, listening to the sound of cascading water while enjoying the surrounding natural beauty. The area is a favorite spot for photography, picnics, and nature walks, offering an immersive experience in Sri Lanka's wilderness.

Overall, Dunhinda Falls is a must-visit destination for those exploring Sri Lanka’s waterfalls. Its combination of scenic splendor, adventure, and tranquility makes it a perfect getaway for nature lovers and travelers seeking an unforgettable experience.
